The GNP–NR wearable pressure sensor offers advantages through its lightweight, flexible, and low-cost design, making it suitable for continuous health and rehabilitation monitoring. Its high sensitivity, repeatability, and ability to conform to body movements enable accurate tracking of mobility, posture, and physical activity, supporting healthy ageing initiatives. The combination of natural rubber elasticity, graphene-based conductivity, and scalable fabrication provides a practical and sustainable solution for wearable healthcare applications.

Ageing populations and individuals undergoing rehabilitation require continuous monitoring of mobility, posture, and physical activity to support early intervention and personalised healthcare management. However, conventional sensors often lack flexibility, comfort, and adaptability for long-term wearable use, particularly on curved or dynamic body surfaces. There is a need for a lightweight, affordable, and highly sensitive wearable sensing solution that can accurately capture physiological and movement-related data while ensuring user comfort and ease of integration.

The invention provides a flexible wearable pressure sensor based on a graphene nanoplatelets-natural rubber (GNP–NR) composite that detects pressure and strain through piezocapacitive sensing, where electrical capacitance changes in response to applied force. The sensor combines the high elasticity of natural rubber with the excellent electrical conductivity of graphene nanoplatelets, enabling sensitive and repeatable signal detection. Fabricated through a simple drop-casting process on a flexible PET substrate, the technology supports scalable and cost-effective manufacturing while allowing seamless integration into wearable electronics and flexible sensing systems.

The innovation lies in the development of a highly flexible and stretchable sensing platform that combines graphene nanoplatelets with natural rubber to achieve both mechanical adaptability and electrical performance. Unlike rigid conventional sensors, the GNP–NR composite enables conformable sensing on flexible and curved surfaces while maintaining sensitivity and reliability. The simple fabrication process further enhances its potential for large-scale production and integration into next-generation wearable healthcare devices.
