Technology Innovation Park Malaysia/Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology and Innovation visit to Stockholm, Sweden from 16 June to 19 June 2024

23 July 2024, Malaysia – Sweden as a leading nation in global innovation, as underscored by its consistent top rankings in the Global Innovation Index (GII), alongside its position among the top 10 happiest countries worldwide, speaks volumes about its highly integrated and efficiently orchestrated innovation ecosystem. This visit is motivated by a dedicated effort to gain insights into the complete ecosystem, which is renowned for its ability to generate significant and impactful outcomes. By fostering closer ties between Sweden, we aim to leverage collective strengths and create synergies that amplify the impact of innovation on a global scale.

During the visit, the delegation had the opportunity to interact with a wide spectrum of influential Swedish innovation actors. These included:

  • Vinnova: Spearheading innovation funding and policy development.
  • FORMAS: Supporting research in sustainability and environmental sciences.
  • Stockholm Epicenter: A hub for entrepreneurial ventures in Stockholm.
  • Karolinska Innovations: Translating medical research into commercial innovations.
  • Sweden National Energy Agency: Promoting sustainable energy solutions.
  • House of Innovation @ Stockholm School of Economics: Fostering academic-business collaborations.
  • Sweden Incubator & Science Park: Supporting startups and incubators.
  • Research Institute of Sweden: Driving technological advancements across various sectors.
  • Stockholm Resilience Centre: Focusing on sustainability and resilience research.
  • Ericsson: Showcasing cutting-edge developments in 5G technology and its transformative potential.

In addition to their engagements with government actors, the delegation also connected with leading companies at the forefront of the life sciences sector during their visit to Sweden via Business Sweden. They interacted with UTI-lizer, which focuses on innovative solutions in urinary tract infection management; Care To Translate, known for their language translation services tailored for healthcare settings; and Heartrunner Sweden AB, a company dedicated to advancing cardiac care technologies.

For TiPM in Malaysia, the goal is to replicate this collaborative spirit and focused mission alignment within its own innovation strategy. By fostering strong partnerships between government bodies, academic institutions, research organisations, and industry players, TiPM aims to create a complete and connected ecosystem that accelerates technological advancement, promotes sustainable development, and enhances Malaysia's global competitiveness.

Emulating Sweden's success involves not only adopting best practices but also nurturing a culture of innovation, encouraging entrepreneurship and facilitating cross-sectoral collaboration. By leveraging these critical success factors, TiPM seeks to position Malaysia as a nucleus for innovation and technological excellence, driving economic growth and societal progress in the years to come.

One of the main outcomes of the visit is to quickly establish a mutually beneficial launchpad for both nations. TiPM will be the contact point for Swedish companies to expand into Malaysia while preparing to take on the ASEAN market with a market population of over 600 million. In like manner, TiPM will collaborate with the Swedish actors for local tech companies to explore the Swedish and European market. TiPM will also be establishing Ignite Malaysia, a replica of the highly accomplished Ignite Sweden to match conglomerates with the most innovative Malaysian and regional startups.
