Joel is our resident expert in the fields of mechanical and civil engineering. At KASS, he puts to good use his wide range of expertise, which includes patent drafting and prosecution for local and international patent applications, patent audits, reinstatement, patentability searches and opinions including freedom-to-operate, validity, infringement and market landscape, and sound knowledge of patent laws pertaining to the ASEAN region. He is also well-versed with foreign filing procedures via the PCT and Paris convention route, and advises clients on patent strategies and effective use of international programmes such as GPPH, PPH and ASPEC.
In addition to his patent work, Joel handles the continuous improvement of the systems and procedures in the patent division, creating guidelines where necessary to ensure efficient operations. He contributes to the management and development of the patent team by reviewing drafts and responses to adverse reports/office actions by junior team members, overseeing the training of patent paralegals, and helping the team to identify and bridge gaps in terms of patent knowledge and skills.
Prior to joining KASS, Joel worked at an engineering company specializing in the design and construction of foundation, geotechnical, and substructure works, where he played a role in implementing Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) projects. Over the years, he has worked with individual inventors, start-up companies, educational institutions, and major domestic and international companies. Joel's expertise is particularly relevant to clients involved in building construction, mechanical systems, petrochemicals, chemistry, and related fields. He is known for his exceptional attention to detail and ability to analyse complex technical information.
